U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded a net outflow of $635.6 million on October 22, their largest single-day withdrawal of October, according to Farside Investors data. The outflow reversed three consecutive sessions of inflows and came as Bitcoin slid toward $80,000.

Summary

  • Spot Bitcoin ETFs lost $635.6 million on October 22, the largest daily outflow of October.
  • BlackRock’s IBIT led the withdrawals at $254.1 million, followed by Fidelity’s FBTC at $217.5 million.
  • The outflow erased more than half of the $1.07 billion the funds took in over the previous three sessions.
  • Ether ETFs also saw redemptions, losing $110.8 million on the day.

BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) accounted for $254.1 million of the outflow, about 40% of the total. Fidelity’s FBTC followed with $217.5 million in withdrawals.

ARK 21Shares’ ARKB lost $109.4 million, Grayscale’s GBTC shed $29.5 million and Bitwise’s BITB recorded $27.4 million in outflows. Morgan Stanley’s MSBT was the only listed fund to post an inflow, adding $2.3 million.

A $1.16 billion one-day swing

The withdrawal followed three sessions of steady buying. The funds took in $526.7 million on October 19, $23.2 million on October 20 and $524.8 million on October 21 — a combined $1.07 billion.

Thursday’s reversal swung net flows by roughly $1.16 billion in a single session and erased well over half of that three-day total. The outflow also pushed October’s cumulative balance into negative territory, to an estimated deficit of $175.6 million in Farside’s daily series.

Price slid as equities sold off

Bitcoin fell to $80,939.54 during the session, within 1.2% of the $80,000 level, and traded near $81,500 on Friday. The Nasdaq Composite fell 2.6% on Thursday, its worst session since June, as doubts over AI spending weighed on technology shares.

Roughly $440 million in leveraged positions were liquidated over 24 hours, most of them longs, according to market data cited by Nexo. Despite Thursday’s outflow, weekly ETF flows remained positive at about $442 million on SoSoValue’s tally, after the strong start to the week.
