How This Calculator Works

The Bitcoin DCA calculator models a recurring-investment plan. You specify how much you invest each period, how often you invest, and how long you keep doing it. The calculator multiplies your per-period amount by the total number of investment periods in your duration window, then divides by your BTC price to estimate the total BTC you would have accumulated.

It assumes:

  • You can buy the same dollar amount at every interval with no slippage.
  • The price you entered is a reasonable proxy for the time-weighted average you would actually receive.
  • Fees and spreads are not separately accounted for in the projection.

Formulas

Total periods = periods-per-year × (duration ÷ 12). Total invested = amount × total periods. BTC accumulated = (amount ÷ BTC price) × total periods. Average buy price = total invested ÷ BTC accumulated. Position value = BTC accumulated × future price. ROI = (position value − total invested) ÷ total invested.

Example Calculation

Investing $200 monthly at an average BTC price of $60,000 for 36 months invests a total of $7,200. Each purchase buys roughly $200 ÷ $60,000 ≈ 0.00333 BTC. Over 36 purchases you accumulate about 0.12 BTC. At a future BTC price of $120,000, that position is worth about $14,400 — a ~$7,200 profit and a 100% ROI on capital invested.

Important Notes

  • DCA does not guarantee profit. It is a buy-discipline strategy, not a return strategy.
  • Real-world exchanges charge trading fees. We suggest deducting 0.10%–0.50% from your future BTC price for a more conservative estimate.
  • If you set a "future price" identical to today's price, ROI comes out to zero by construction.

Frequently Asked Questions

Dollar-Cost Averaging. A strategy in which you invest a fixed amount at fixed intervals regardless of price, smoothing your average entry across time.
Academic research (e.g., Vanguard, 2012) often shows lump-sum outperforms DCA on average because markets tend to rise over time. DCA's real value is psychological: it reduces the regret of a bad entry.
Most research finds that weekly and monthly DCA produce similar long-run averages. Choose a cadence that aligns with your cash flow — every pay cheque is a fine starting point.
Our calculator intentionally does not. Subtract 0.10%–0.50% from your projected future price for a realistic estimate, or use the BTC net of fees with the average buy price calculator.
