How This Calculator Works

For a leveraged position, your broker keeps some of your position value as margin, and your position is forcibly closed when the remaining equity drops below the maintenance-margin requirement. The price at which that happens is the liquidation price.

Our simplified model assumes:

  • Long: liquidation ≈ entry × (1 − 1/leverage + maintenance %).
  • Short: liquidation ≈ entry × (1 + 1/leverage − maintenance %).

This is the textbook isolated-margin model. Real exchanges use tier-based maintenance margins, can move orders via auto-deleveraging, and may add insurance-fund protections that change the actual outcome.

Example

You open a 10× long at $60,000 entry with 0.5% maintenance margin. Liquidation ≈ 60,000 × (1 − 0.1 + 0.005) = $54,300. A 9.5% adverse move will trigger liquidation in this model.

Important Notes

  • Funding fees can erode margin over time and pull liquidation closer.
  • Cross-margin positions share risk across your whole account, which lowers effective liquidation but increases overall risk.
  • Liquidation can cascade in fast markets and trigger auto-deleveraging of opposing orders.
  • Dex perpetuals, options, and combo positions have entirely different models.
