How This Calculator Works

Position sizing converts your risk budget (the percentage of your account you are willing to lose on this trade) into a concrete position size using the distance to your stop-loss. If you can afford to lose $100 and your stop is $500 below your entry, you can buy 100 ÷ 500 = 0.2 units.

The reward-to-risk ratio compares the distance to your take-profit to the distance to your stop. Trades with R:R ≥ 1:2 are commonly considered favourable.

Formulas

Risk amount = balance × risk % ÷ 100. Stop distance = |entry − stop|. Position units = risk amount ÷ stop distance. Position value = position units × entry. Reward distance = |take-profit − entry|. Potential profit = position units × reward distance. R:R = potential profit ÷ risk amount.

Example

$10,000 account, 1% risk = $100 risk budget. Entry $60,000, stop $58,500 (distance $1,500). Position = 100 ÷ 1,500 ≈ 0.0667 BTC ($4,000 value). Take-profit at $63,500 (distance $3,500) yields a profit of about $233 → 1 : 2.33 R:R.

Important Notes

• 1% risk per trade is a common default; lower if you are early in your trading journey.
• Wide stops require smaller positions; tight stops require larger positions — both increase relative risk.
• This calculator does not include fees, slippage, or funding — subtract them from the reward or add them to the risk to be conservative.
